You're right, it's wide open to a variety of interpretations. I believe, looking at what history has shown us, that disarming a populace is a step towards government totalitarianism. Over and over again, we've seen fascism preceded by gun confiscation. So either our founding fathers were aware of this from their historical perspective, or they were prescient.
