You make excellent points. I think business and people being what they are, holidays will continue to be commercialized (i.e. Christmas and all the rest of them). As a result, it's up to individual people, families, communities, to try and retain the relevance of holidays that have significance for them. You're right about the pandering. That's politics, and it's as inevitable as a businesses push to make money.
