Trump and Harris Will Not Destroy Our Democracy, but Spending Might

Our government’s insatiable appetite for money and our insatiable appetite for more could destroy us.

I don’t much believe in political prophecies. Or at least, I don’t believe in the ones our current self-proclaimed prophets and religious quacks dream up. But in 2019, a friend sent me the link to a site and urged me to check it out.

Usually I ignore these links, but it must have been a day when I didn’t have much to do, because I clicked on it. A man was talking about his wild, supposedly prophetic dreams.

While I don’t buy in to all that, one thing about his dream stuck in my mind. The “prophet” had seen a vision of bankers and politicians making backroom deals. They shook hands, while the whole country exploded and trillions of dollars flew up a chimney, disappearing into thin air.

It doesn’t take a prophet or a vivid imagination to believe politicians and powerful, wealthy people are making backroom deals. But the image of money disappearing into thin air seemed eerily appropriate when I read about our yawning U.S. budget deficit.

Why we are in trouble
