These are great questions. I read the moving story of a woman who inherited a gene that meant she had 100 percent chance of coming down with a degenerative, debilitating disease that led to death. She had watched her brilliant father lose his physical and mental capacities and die a slow death of it. She chose in vitro, so she could choose embroyos without the gene. This was the only way she and her husband could have children and not have a 50/50 risk of passing along this genetic defect. She now has a couple of healthy children without that gene, and the other embroyos were destroyed. The Alabama ruling would not allow this, I assume.
