From what I've read of Jewish culture at the time, it seems the disciples were in their late teens or early twenties, although they're depicted in movies as much older. One of them, Peter, was married, as we learn when Jesus visits him and his wife in their home and heals the MIL.
I'm sure it must have been hard to leave family behind. My grandson just got accepted into the Army, and leaves for boot camp in April. He's flying out to see his girlfriend before then, and who knows where he'll be deployed?
Also, when I think of the disciples I think of explorers who left for years at a time, and people who have jobs that send them traveling away from their families. What a hard decision to make!
