Taliban Bans Windows in Latest Outrage
The bullies won’t stop.
Just when you thought you’d heard it all, the Taliban strikes again. Afghan women are already banned from speaking, singing, reciting poetry or appearing without a male escort in public. They also can’t attend school or go to a public park. Now even looking through a window is at risk.
The supreme leader has issued an order banning the construction of windows in residential buildings that overlook areas used by Afghan women. He also advocates blocking existing windows.
Does the Taliban believe women should be confined to a windowless cinder block room, or maybe a cage, to avoid the lustful eyes of men?
Evidently.
According to an article by Wakil Kohsar in AFP global news, buildings shouldn't have windows through which it is possible to see the courtyard, kitchen, neighbor’s well and other places used by women. This could lead to “obscene acts.”
Mention of the neighbor’s well reminded me of another story about a well. Only in that story, Jesus chatted with a woman at the well as an equal and she became one of his earliest disciples to spread the good news. That was over 2,000 years ago, so we’re seeing a huge regression in women’s rights.
