People have always been vain about appearances, knowing that looks are currency to an extent. “Man looks on the outside but God looks on the heart.” Religious faith can be a counter to this because it encourages the other values you mentioned, even when they go against our innate nature. When a surface veneer, whether it relies on beauty or ostentatious wealth fails us, those other values can sustain and encourage, keeping us from the despair that reliance on transient things eventually evokes.
