People are amazingly, asoundingly tight with their money, ( in other words, cheap) and few people care how much time and effort you put into something. Once when I was selling some of my books at a nonprofit because the book was about the nonprofit, a fellow volunteer grabbed a book and said “I just want to borrow it for a quick read in one night, I’ll bring it back tomorrow.” She hurried out the door, never brought the book back and never paid for it. Another time I wrote a book that was popular at my church, but I wasn’t selling many books. I found out my “friends” were passing around one copy for all to read. So it isn’t just e-books, although when I published an e-book I discovered they were being downloaded all over the web for free.
