One thing I’ve discovered about financial security and attitude toward money is something that sounds extreme and counterproductive. This odd approach is to give money away! My husband and I decided early on that we were too obsessed with money; making it, spending it, keeping up with it or keeping up with others who had it. In order to get our minds off accumulating wealth, we started giving money away; to causes that were near and dear, to family and others in need, to nonprofits.
What happened was, money became less important. As our priorities shifted our performance at work improved. We didn’t have to buy that new car to keep up with the Jones’s because we knew we had no way of keeping up with them anyway, since we were giving money away. And a strange thing happened. We started making more and more money. Our net worth soared. The less we focused on money as an end in itself, the more money we seemed to have. There is no logic to this approach, but it has caused us great satifaction and hasn’t put a dent in our financial security.
