I've had friends die of Covid too, and the initial vaccines were life savers. But the virus has changed. It's not as deadly, most people have some immunity, and the boosters, which lose efficacy after only 4 months, are not as effective or as necessary. I've known people with no vaccines who got only a mild case of Covid. The vaccine does not prevent disease at this point, and it's debatable whether current boosters reduce the severity. Covid is an entirely different ballgame now.
