I wondered if finding themselves in the black would go to their heads and they would cut back payments to increase their income even more. This was my first thought upon hearing that Medium was no longer failing financially.

The board members in my previous job had a similar mentality. As director, I brought sales from 180K a year to 1.2 million. But instead of being elated, they began to tell me, "If we can make 1.2 million, why not double that?"

The problem was, they didn't want to raise our pay, hire new people, or do anything to invest in the business. They seemed to think, by working us harder and longer, the money would magically appear.
