I think a nursing home would have been more expensive for them, as my relatives were not very well off financially. Some of them did have relatives, though. For instance, some had a spouse to take care of them. One had a daughter who took care of him. But yes, I agree with you it's hard on people who have neither money nor family nor anyone else to help out.
