I once read that being a “happy” person was one of the most important characteristics in a marriage. I’ve thought about this a lot, because when we are intrinsically happy and don’t derive our happiness from the other person, we are more inclined to accept that person as he/she is. By not insisting that someone else make us happy, we are not constantly disappointed. We bring the strength of our own joy to a relationship, freeing the other person from being the source of our joy.
