I just read a post by a Pennsylvania writer who hates southern accents. He said southern accents were a “trigger,” making him feel like the speaker was dumb. He is trying hard to overcome his prejudices.

At first, because I’m a southerner with a PRONOUNCED southern accent, I was irritated. Then I had to laugh, because of the big, cosmic joke God played on my husband. My husband thought southerners were dumb, too. The accent proved it. Then God dropped me in his path, southern accent and all. Forty five years later, he doesn’t think southerners are so dumb.

So watch those snap judgments. They might come back to haunt you.
