I don't believe the environment has been eroded, although we've been led to believe that. According to the EPA, the air we breathe is a lot cleaner than in the 80's, since the passage of the clean air act. And believe it or not, the United States has more trees than it did 100 years ago, and many nearly-exctinct species are making a comeback.
