I differ with you on the subject of autism rates. They are absolutely going up; you just need to visit a public school and see the number of autistic children in special ed. My grandson is autistic (nonverbal, on the extremely low-functioning end of the spectrum) at 10 years old, and there was never anything like this in our family, or in my home town before. I wouldn’t presume to know the cause, except for the fact that there must be a genetic component with some sort of environmental trigger. Maybe some children are being diagnosed as autistic who would merely have been considered unsocial in an earlier time, but these aren’t the cases I’m talking about. I’m referring to large numbers of children who are growing into adults entirely unable to function without assistance. There is a cause. We just don’t know what it is yet.
