I believe God is with that little boy now, in a place where he can no longer be hurt by the existence of evil and pain. That’s where I believe God is. There’s no explanation for suffering unless you account for the existence of free will and evil. Look at what happened to Jesus! A man who preached love and forgiveness, and he died a horrible death! God allowed it to happen. But Jesus warned us ahead of time that we would have problems in this world, and his resurrection showed me that this world is not all there is. Our lives here are only a drop in the bucket of eternity. I can’t explain evil and have wondered that very thing myself, as have all people, both believers and unbelievers. If I believed this was all there was to life and our spirits didn’t live on, I would blame God. But as it is, I blame evil people. Or people who are so disturbed and hurting that they perpetrate evil acts. There is no satisfactory explanation if you believe that life on planet earth is all there is. But if you believe there is a love and goodness that ultimately redeems and triumphs, you still cry for the sadness and depravity, but you live with hope and faith.
