Differences Don’t Have to Create Hostility
There is a better way
The woman across from me was dark-skinned with a cascade of curls. A blonde woman tried to corral a rambunctious toddler, and two tattooed teenagers dug into burgers and fries.
Have you ever watched people in an airport? They are a collage of colors, shapes, sizes. How boring if they all looked like me!
But these Medium headlines indicate that differences breed hostility instead of creating wonder and delight:
The Old White Guys are Terrified
Why are We Asking Why Black Immigrants do Better than Black Americans?
Why Can’t I Travel Like My White Friends Can?
Yet what would happen if we heeded these words?
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34
Or this:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3
