Another Friend Died This Week

Death laps at the edges of my joy, waves crashing, then receding. From my mother’s last breath to my friends who died of Covid to the woman who passed suddenly and unexpectedly last week, this year has been a relentless tide.

There have been so many.

My friend had a perfect day. She ate with friends, hugged her family, volunteered, enjoyed the loveliness of her newly remodeled home, settled down to watch a holiday movie, and slipped quietly from this life. She leaves a family shell-shocked, in mourning.

Waves leave a residue of shells and shining periwinkles, a beach strewn with jewels.

Death leaves a deepened spirit, glimpses of eternity in mundane moments, renewed resolve to relish life.

“Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:22
